TEL AVIV, Israel - The Israeli Air Force has attacked targets near the Syrian city of Hama, killing two Iranians, according to Syrian and foeign media outlets.

The Jerusalem Post said the reports alleged the attack came from Lebanese airspace.

The target of the attack on Saturday is believed to have been a Syrian military base under the control of Iranian forces.

Social media reports said an unmanned Israeli aircraft drone flew over Dahiyah in southern Beirut at low altitude on Saturday morning.

The Israeli military has neither confirmed or denied it was behind the attack.

On Monday of this week the U.S. designated Iran's elite military force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as a terrorist group, and imposed sanctions that include freezes on assets the IRGC may have in the U.S. and a ban on Americans doing business with the corps.

"This unprecedented step, led by the Department of State, recognizes the reality that Iran is not only a State Sponsor of Terrorism, but that the IRGC actively participates in, finances, and promotes terrorism as a tool of statecraft," U.S. President Donald Trump said in a statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted in response: "Thank you, President @realDonaldTrump for your decision to designate the Islamic revolutionary guards as a terrorist organization. Once again you are keeping the world safe from Iran aggression and terrorism."

On Friday, thousands of Iranians chanted "death to America" and "death to Israel" in Tehran as they demonstrated the U.S. decision while they burned Israeli and American flags.

In retaliation to Washington's decision, Iran's top security council has designated U.S. military forces a "terrorist organization."
