From puzzles to photo apps, Apple releases its favorites

CALIFORNIA, U.S. - As part of its annual tradition, Apple released a list of its favourite apps and games of the year on Thursday.

The tech giant even named its ‘app of the year’ and a ‘game of the year’ for both the iPhone and the iPad.

From meditation apps to photo editing and puzzle applications, a variety of apps featured on its annual list. 

In its year-end list of top U.S. apps for iPhones and iPads, Apple named Calm, a health and fitness app as its iPhone app of the year. 

Calm is an app that provides soundtracks and guides for meditation, including routines to help you sleep.

Many of the features of the free app are only available through in-app purchases or a subscription.

Apple said that its iPhone game of the year was Splitter Critters, a creative and cute puzzler in which players navigate the game's two-dimensional world by ripping it apart and pasting it back together. 

The game features, priced at $2.99, is a new augmented-reality mode. 

Affinity Photo, the company's iPad app of the year is a professional-level photo editing suite that can handle uncompressed RAW files and allows users to create an unlimited number of layers. 

The app is priced at $19.99.

The Witness, a beautiful single-person puzzle game was named as Apple’s iPad game of the year and is priced at $9.99. 

Apple’s apps of the year is determined by the company employees and their picks are supposed to be based at least in part on the merits of the apps themselves.

It is not based on how many downloads the apps have had or other business criteria.

Further, the company said that the company determines its top apps on a per-country basis.
